Does Your Pet Need a Seat Belt?
Earlier in the month, we were informed of a new law that supposedly has gone into effect regarding restraining your pets while driving. We have had a lot of questions from our clients regarding exactly what the law means for you and your pets.
The Monmouth County SPCA put us in touch with Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer Victor Amato, who says,
“There is no pet seat belt law- I do not know why the state of New Jersey felt the need to state that the law was changed, because it has not. No Animal Control Officers will be pulling people over if their pets are not in a seat belt.”
He then went on to say that people still need to use common sense- if your pet is in your lap while driving, on your dash board, hanging out a window or riding in the bed of your truck, you can be pulled over by a police officer or an animal control officer and you will be fined. This however is in accordance with the current law. To view this law in its entirety, CLICK HERE.
Even though there is no seat belt law for our pets, we still highly recommend that you restrain your pet while driving in the car, whether it is by keeping them in a carrier, putting a gate or a screen up to divide the front and the back seat, or by purchasing a seat belt harness for your pet like the one in the image below:

We also recommend that your pet remain in the back seat instead of next you in the front. This is because if your car’s airbag were to deploy, the impact could severely injure or even kill your pet.

Honor ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Cat Month by adopting a new friend!
http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/programs/special-initiatives/adopt-a-cat-month/
In honor of “American Humane Association Adopt a Cat Month”, we wanted to remind our readers of the 3 very special girls we have up for adoption. All 3 are very sweet and loving, and are desperately in need of finding a forever home!
Dickens
Dickens is a lovely female domestic short hair with piercing green eyes and a tuxedo coat. She is about 4 years old and longs for the right forever home. Dickens is bright and affectionate, but like any cat she has a mind of her own! As wonderful a girl as dickens is, she did not fit in at her first home. She prefers to be an only cat and if the forever home has children, they should be older- she is very hesitant around small children. dickens has a weakness for fish flavored food and her green cat bed is her favorite possession.
Gray
Gray is a 10 month old female domestic short hair who came to us with her mother, Smokey. She is a gorgeous tabby, with tawny eyes and delicate stripes in her gray fur. She hasn’t known much of life outside of a cage and would love a home to explore and feel safe in. Despite her sheltered life, Gray is extremely loving and craves attention. She is still very much a kitten and looks forward to playtime and treats.
Smokey
Smokey is a small 2 year old female domestic short hair who came to us in February 2012 with her daughter Gray. Smokey is a beautiful gray tabby with a special physical trait- she has fewer toes then the average cat. This cute little anomaly has no effect on her movement, but makes her even more endearing. When Smokey first came to us she was a very frightened little girl but with patience and kindness from our staff she has grown quite trusting and affectionate. Do not let the look on this pretty girls face fool you- although she has come a long way, she is a bit camera shy and was not too thrilled to have her picture taken!

The Little Silver Animal Hospital Foundation For Animals is a charitable organization created to help give a second chance to homeless pets and to pets in need. In our first year the foundation has provided support for rescue groups to save shelter pets, created a volunteer program, bought a snowplow for a rescue facility and provided surgical care for a kitten with a heart condition. We try to address the specific needs of each situation. Rather than direct funding, we purchase specific items and services with the donations that we collect.

What a Long Summer
Been a while since we have been on the blog so here are some updates on what is happening.
Dr. Claudia Regan and her husband Ivan welcome baby Zee into the world. We are hoping to have her back at work soon.
Houndstooth came and went and, guess what, they are coming back October 21 and October 22.
If you haven’t noticed our windows as you drive by please take a look, carefully if you are driving. See if you can guess whose pets are showcased.
We now have Digital X-ray, which is the latest on the high tech scene. Digital X-Ray allows us to give you the best quality images when it comes to your pets.
The latest addition is our Laser. It is a Class 1 and 3 Laser that we can use to treat a wide spectrum of issues from arthritis, acute pain, lameness, wounds, and other ailments. Dr Scott Kilcullen and Dr Richard Yacowitz are now using the laser for acupuncture to help get better results. Stay tuned because a Class 4 Laser is on the way.
We are now carrying two over the counter foods from Hills - Science Diet and Nature’s Best. A Natural line of food with no additives or preservatives. This food is what the doctors at Little Silver Animal Hospital feed their pets. Science Diet Mobility formula has a very high level of Omega Fatty Acids that will help decrease joint inflammation. It has been well proven that fatty acids, in the correct ratio, play an important role in decreasing inflammation in the body. They are great for the heart, kidney, skin and joints.
Congrats to the Staff of Little Silver A.H. who helped raise money for a great charity during which our office manager, Amy Arnone, won 4 tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway!
We also wish Ellen ,one of our beloved receptionists, Good Luck on her upcoming nuptials.

Announcing New Feline J/D
Many of you have heard of Science Diet’s prescription diet J/D which stands for Joint Diet. What Hills figured out is that Omega Fatty Acids, if fed in the right balance and if in great enough quantities, have excellent anti-inflamatory properties. They are great for the heart, kidneys, and coat, just ask our staff. Currently several of our pets eat J/D. It has been used for allergies (inhallant) and joints. Those who may want to continue to feed there own diet can even use it as a supplement. Just 3/4 cup of J/D has 9 grams of omega fatty acids. There are other good points that it is not a fatty food. So what does this all have to do with my statement? Well, now Hills is releasing Feline J/D. For those cats that have poor hair coats and joint problems, this new option is available. We will be recieving Feline J/D in the next few weeks…
